The quality of Melt Myburgh’s poetry debut is sure to attract the attention of critics. The first part of the volume contains poems about the landscape of the Northern Cape along the banks of the Orange River, as the title envisages. The “reflections” in the title of the first section refer not only to images of existence in this arid, hot region as mirrored in the river and irrigation canals, but also to meditations on the meaning the region and its inhabitants has for the poet. The second section contains a number of poems on Spain, where the landscape is reminiscent of the Northern Cape, but at the same time is undeniably the world of the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca. In the section “gesigte” some of the poems have a visionary quality, while others debunk accepted views, such as “’n beeld raak los”, in which one of the cement statues of the Owl House in New Bethesda is dismantled until only the wire skeleton remains. The last section, “inkdood’, deals with the poet’s attempts to restore the destruction wreaked by death and decay. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
