Very few historical facts are known about St Luke the Evangelist, but in this well-researched novel a credible narrative is woven around this biblical figure. The first part deals with Luke’s training as physician and general circumstances in the Mediterranean world during the reign of Tiberius, the Roman Emperor. Luke’s first encounter with the apostle Peter and the first Christians in Palestine is portrayed in the second part. The notes Luke made of the narrations of the disciples of Christ would later serve as basis for the Gospel according to Luke. He also met Saul, then still known as a merciless persecutor of the Christians. Both Saul and Luke, however, were converted to the new faith, and when they met again, Luke joined Saul/Paul on his missionary journeys. In the last part of the novel Luke is shown visiting a number of cities in Greece and modern-day Turkey. The two men also went back to Jerusalem, where Paul was arrested. Eventually Paul appealed to the Emperor and journeyed to Rome, where he was sentenced to death by Nero. After Paul’s execution, Luke had to find a new mission, only to realise that his true calling would be to write down what he had learned about the life of Jesus and the acts of the apostles.
